Why Alpacas?
- Alpacas are rare and in demand worldwide! They are considered the world's finest livestock investment. But unlike the stock market, alpacas are an investment that you can see, touch and personally manage. Raising alpacas can be a fun and rewarding lifestyle.
- Slow and steady growth of the industry. Females usually only birth 1 cria per year, twins are rare. The current ARI census of Huacaya and Suri alpacas in the United States is around 100,000. These numbers are small compared to the large numbers of horse, beef cattle, and sheep.
- ARI - Alpaca Registry Incorporated. All alpacas registered with the ARI have been DNA tested and parentage has been verified. Closure of the registry to further imports in 1998 has allowed alpaca prices to remain stable and the industry to remain focused on breeding stock for many years to come.
- AOBA - Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association is a strong, national organization that supports the needs of its growing membership. AOBA provides national marketing support in the form of ad campaigns, television, and magazine advertising, and a quarterly publication, "The Alpacas Magazine." A "Breeders Guide" listing breeders by state is published yearly. AOBA also maintains a web site with information to the public.
- Alpacas are ideal small farm livestock and family business. Large amounts of acreage, equipment, and manpower are not needed to raise these intelligent, earth friendly animals. Anyone can raise alpacas!
- Alpacas produce one of the world's finest and most luxurious fibers in 22 natural colors. Many breeders open farm stores, selling products made from alpaca fiber.
- Alpacas are irresistible, addicting, and a joy to own! You can't have just one; you have to start with two, then the rest is up to you!
